Excerpt:
Chapter One: The Accident
I fumbled with the phone and finally got it to my ear. “Hell, hello?” I felt like I had cotton in my mouth as I tried to speak. I cleared my through and tried again. “Hello, this is Shondra.”
“Shondra, hi, I hate to call you so early in the morning, but Sarah asked me to call.” I could hear the sob she was trying to choke back. I sat up in my bed, as I was suddenly wide-awake.
“Sarah? Ms. Christensen? What’s wrong?” I blurted out quickly.
“Yes, sorry, this is Sarah’s mom. Sarah has been in an accident. A drunk driver hit her on her way home from work. She is in the hospital. She … I mean, we, would really like you to come as soon as possible.” Her voice quivered as spoke. It was clear that the damage was significant.
“Be right there.” With only one hospital that took trauma victims, I already knew where I was headed.
