As
I walked off with my lunch, I looked for a quiet, accompanied table. Seeing one
in the corner, I quickly got myself comfortable so I could just disappear for a
few. As if she could see I was going to get lost in my thoughts, Rhianna sat
down next to me.
“Hey,
sweetie. Do you need anything? The girls were looking at surprising you tonight
with ice cream and a movie, but I thought you might want to know first.” She laughed
as she shook her head.
I
bit slowly into my burger and shook my head. “I’m not ready for company, so
thanks for the heads up. Love you guys, but right now is just not good. I need
to go through Sarah’s stuff tonight anyway. Her landlord is wanting to try to
have it rented out by summer.”
“Are
you serious? How callous!” Rhianna was shocked, but I wasn’t. He is thinking
from a business standpoint. I figured I would just take boxes and then pitch it
or take it back to my apartment to sort later.
“Tell
the girls I am going to take a rain check.” Knowing full well that I had no
idea when I would be ready for that many people in one spot.
I
finished my sandwich and tried the fries, but couldn’t stomach them. It had
been about 30 minutes anyway. Dumping my tray, I headed back to work.
Unfortunately, Mike cut me off.
“You
are going home. Laura has volunteered to stay a few hours, and I want you to
take the rest of the week off. I know you don’t think you need it, but I don’t
think you have had time to process everything yet.” He wrapped me in a large
hug and added, “Get your stuff and we will see you next week, okay?”
I sighed and nodded my head. I feared if I said a word, the dam was going to break.
