Marti kneeled close to the floor to look under the couch. She lifted up the flap of green chenille to find a tiny white kitten with sad blue eyes shaking and creeping towards the wall. She knew she had heard the cries of a kitten but she wasn't sure how it got into her house.
"Aww, it's okay little one. You're safe." She said as she reached towards the scared kitten.
The kitten didn't move so Marti lowered the flap of the couch and went to her kitchen in search of something that would convince the poor kitty that she was in good hands. Grabbing a can of tuna out of the cabinet, she reached for the can opener. No sooner had she gotten the lid off the tuna that she heard the pitiful cries restarting. Only this time, it was less muffled … and closer. Looking down, Marti saw that the kitten had come to join her in the kitchen. She sat a few feet away, cowering low to the ground with her wisp of a tail wrapped tightly around her body.
"You must be hungry. How about I put a little of this in a bowl?" Marti reached for a small plastic dish off the second shelf and gently paused at the plastic plates that used to be always in the kitchen sink. Her heart leapt into her throat and she began to fight back tears. She grabbed the plastic bowl and looked back down at the sad kitten
"Maxim would have loved you. He loved all animals." Forking some of the tuna onto the dish, she continued talking. "Jacob wouldn't have approved though. He isn't a fan of anything that makes messes. It took me four years to convince him to have a child with me."
She put the bowl of tuna on the floor and watched for the kitten to move. After what seemed like ten minutes, the kitten crept towards the offered food. Once there, however, she had no problem devouring the food.
